From the publisher:  Earthy, sexy, and vivacious, the life of beloved country singer Patsy Cline, who soared from obscurity to international fame to tragic death in just 30 short years, is explored in colorful and poignant detail. An innovator and even a "hell-raiser," Cline broke all the boys' club barriers of Nashville's music business in the 1950s and brought a new Nashville sound to the nation with her pop hits and torch ballads like "Walking After Midnight," "I Fall to Pieces," and "Crazy."

Ellis Nassour was the very first to write about Cline and did so with the cooperation of the stars who knew and loved her, including Jimmy Dean, Jan Howard, Brenda Lee, Loretta Lynn, Roger Miller, Dottie West, and Faron Young. Nassour was the only writer to interview Cline's mother and husbands.

This book is a companion to the MCA tribute CD. Artists participating on the CD talk about Patsy in this book, as will Brenda Lee, Loretta Lynn, Harold Bradley, and others. Best of all this is the first collection of photographs of Patsy ever released in a "coffee table" book! GORGEOUS.

Love Always, Patsy

This book is a compilation of Patsy's personal letters (through 1959) to Treva Miller, the gal who started Patsy's first fan club. Here are the cover notes:

"Few stars shine as brightly as Patsy Cline. Her music still moves us; her untimely death still haunts us. And now, recounted in Patsy's own words, is a life that still touches us. In 1955, Treva Miller Steinbicker, a starstruck girl from East Tennessee, approached an up-and-coming country western singer in the hopes of establishing her fan club. Patsy Cline cheerfully accepted the honor. Over the next four years, through an intimate exchange of letters, she would become Treva's close friend and confidante. Love Always, Patsy is the collection of that remarkable, cherished correspondence ~ poignant, colorful, humorous, and genuinely revealing in its honesty and warmth. We meet the aspiring young singer from Winchester, Virginia, excited at the prospects of her burgeoning career ~ and devastated by its impact on a volatile and demanding marriage. We experience the joy of the birth of her daughter, the strains of stardom, her loneliness on the road to success, and share in the rewards of a relationship with the one man who became the love of her life. Above all, these intimate letters reveal the dreams and aspirations, the private heartbreak and the public pressures of an ordinary woman who would become one of the most recognized and beloved names in the history of country music. Love Always, Patsy is a rare treasure for fans ~ an intimate self-portrait told in a voice that rings as true, as unique and as powerful as the music that made Patsy Cline a legend."

My personal favorite ~ Jones scores extra points with me because as a woman, she understands how the feminine mind works... it helps to be one to know how it feels!  Her speculation about Patsy corresponds with my own.  Interesting insights and observations; highly recommended from this quarter.  Negatives: Jones sometimes tells us more than we need to know; ask her what time it is, she gives you the history of clocks.  Also, this book meanders a bit a times.

A nice companion book to the two videos produced by the same company.  No real new stories or photos, but they do include more excerpts from Patsy's own letters which we've never read before ~ what a writer Patsy was!  She could've so easily written her own autobiography

Originally published in 1981 and arguably the definitive biography, it has an important place in any Patsifan's library. Nassour has reconstructed conversations in his book based upon interviews with Patsy's family and friends (Patsy's mom, Charlie Dick, Dottie West, Faron Young and countless others) to create a sort of "you-are-there" feeling. He writes with care about his subject. I particularly like his recreation of the events surrounding March 5th, 1963. Nothing is sensationalized, and to me it is the best part of the book. I prefer his earlier editions (no longer in print), because I'm not crazy about the sensationalized jacket on the paperback version of the 3rd edition. Bear in mind, though, that this edition is not just a rehash of his prior editions; half of it is all new, including unique, rare photos, plus additional interviews!

A fast read, somewhat sensationalized, but well organized if you don't have the patience or time to curl up with a long book about Patsy.

On the Road to Patsy Cline
"On the Road to Patsy Cline"
by John Reinhard

"Celebrating life in small towns and cities with poignant lyricism, Reinhard sings to us of jukeboxes, skinny-dipping, and burger shacks. His poems are set along the Patsy Cline Memorial Highway and the Tongue River, and reverberate with small town Americana." ~ New Rivers Press

"John Reinhard's new book of poetry comes to us with its sorrow and humor intact.   How it combines extreme desolation and tenderness, wonder and disillusion in quite this way I'll never know, but it does, and the poems carry forward their accounts of loss and recovery with a fine lyric eloquence." ~ Charles Baxter, author of First Light and Shadow Play

This one is very enjoyable because of the rare photos and stories from Patsy's hometown friends and neighbors. Those of you who are interested in Patsy's family history will particularly love it ~ you get a good feel for her roots, the people she came from! (Hint:  she comes from good people, sturdy stock... surprised?!)

Author David Davis promised, and delivered, some fun new Patsy stories, NOT just a mention of her name, in this biography of Bobby Helms (the 50's Pop/Rock icon who sang the song from which the book takes its title). It is very hard to find these days -- look for a used copy at the above link.

"Brown & Davis present a warm and touching profile of this recording artist. It is an entertaining look at the music business from the inside by someone who was there. David Ward Davis brings life to this tragic story as a former manager and partner with Helms. A star by the age of eight, Bobby Helms literally burst onto the international scene with the #18 all-time pop hit "My Special Angel" and the #1 all-time country music chart song "Fraulein," three mega hits, several gold records, and a long string of top 40 singles, yet this artist went virtually unknown...why?" ~ Aalida Press
