Notes-7

January 9, 2003:

Hope everyone's year is getting off to a fine start! Are you ready for another year of Patsification? Can your ears and your heart stand it?? There's lots of work to do for Patsy in the upcoming year, if you wish to be a part of it! It's probably too late to remind/notify magazine publications about the upcoming 40th anniversary of (don't make me type those words), but it would still be a great idea to contact newspapers about it. Any suggestions or fresh ideas for that sacred day are welcome. (I've heard nary a peep from Ryman, have you??)

Found this letter to the editor at WestWord:

Soulless survivors: Regarding "The Heart of Country," David Hill's profile of Dallas Wayne in the December 5 issue:

There will be nobody to listen to in another thirty years out of today's country crop. No Haggard, Jones, Nelson, Rodriguez or Tammy. Dallas Wayne is right, and Jim Reeves is turning in his grave. Hank Sr., Patsy Cline and Ray Price do not tour anymore. Madonna, Enrique Iglesias, Milli Vanilli and whoever are all Grammy winners. So much for Grammys and music in general. We gave them Smoky, Santana, Aretha, Janis and Marvin Gaye; in return we got Fat Boys, New Kids on the Block and Britney Spears. Music from the soul to music from the advertising media greed. Gracias, but no thanks.

Dallas, no man is a prophet in his own homeland -- but some of us hear your message.

~ Jesse Orona, Aurora, CO

How beautiful! And it once again conjured up the idea of Patsy touring. Can you imagine the idea of Patsy just touring, doing shows, like everybody else? She'd have an official website someplace with concert dates, news about upcoming projects she was working on, interviews. Can't tell you how much it makes my heart hurt.

Someone recently said that Patsy Cline was a "walking, singing middle finger." I rather like that visual! I'm not sure if today's younger generation fully understands what Patsy was up against back in the 50's, to really comprehend that the simple act of becoming a C&W singer, to tour alone, to sing in smoky juke joints... all of these things took tremendous guts, tremendous drive, tremendous talent! Whatta dame...!

I saw yet another review of yet another Patsy show where yet another gal singer was yet again called "the next Patsy Cline." I guess the reason it bothers me is because it seems so easy for the words "the next Patsy Cline" or "sounds just like Patsy Cline" to roll off some folks' tongues. As a result, the onslaught of these comparisons just ends up diluting the power of Patsy's own pure voice, it waters her down. It's like calling any old piece of glass Austrian crystal. It makes people forget what the real thing sounds like, and why no one will ever convince me that (Singer X) sounds like Patsy Cline. I want to carry the torch for the original, pure, perfect sound!

"Oh, no! It's that awful Patsy wannabe singing again! Can you turn it down, honey?"
"Sorry, sweetie, there's some awful Patsy wannabe singing, and I can't hear a word you're saying!"

A note to Dr. H.D.E.: You told us that you were going to do some heavy bidding at that auction last month, and planned to give it all to the museum. We're waiting on tenterhooks to hear about your success, so do drop us a note and let us know what you "walked away" with! (Just because you don't care for me personally doesn't mean that all of these other Patsifans should be left wondering....)

Speaking of the auction, I forgot to tell y'all that when Theresa and I arrived at our hotel, the housekeeper left the following note:

Welcome! I hope you enjoy your stay with us. If there's anything I can get you, please leave a note, and I'll be happy to help you. Have a wonderful day and a relaxing evening. God bless, safe travels, and sweet dreams.

I still have the goosebumps to prove she actually wrote that! We definitely took it as a sign of good luck!

Someone at the Message Board recently asked folks to comment on Patsy's mannerisms/quirks. This is what I wrote ~ do you see these things, too?

This one is hard. Vocally there are certain words she sings that intrigue me. For instance, in "Sweet Dreams" I'm enchanted by the way she sings the word "should." I can't describe what she does with it, but she sure doesn't sing it the way we Texans do, LOL! It's beautiful. Also in that song I love how she sings "instead." It's a very unique pronunciation that I always looks forward to. I also like it when she starts a song with "Well," because it means she's gonna kick some ass in all that follows! As for physical mannerisms. Hmmmm. OK, here's one. In that early, early, early video of her singing WAM at the piano, she does this one incredibly cool thing with her eyebrows. I haven't seen the video in quite some time, but I am almost certain that it occurs when she sings "lonesome as I can be." This expression on her face, led by the brows, is the most kind face you've ever seen in your life, the face of an angel. It's priceless! I also like it when she's singing how she'll sometimes look up or look off, and carry you with her to that imagined place she is seeing. Magic....

December 24, 2002:

A special Christmas treat ~ a message from Lorna at Profiles in History to all Patsifans:

Dear Lisa -

Happy Holidays!

The staff at Profiles in History just reviewed the Patsified! site. We are so thrilled that you were able to be successful bidders at the Patsy Cline Auction! Patsy Cline is a very fortunate celebrity to have such a devoted group of fans and we felt it was an honor to handle so many wonderful pieces from her personal wardrobe. Congratulations once again and we wish all the Patsified! fans a Happy New Year!

It's funny, I never think of Patsy as being the fortunate one here, because we spend so much time happily and willingly immersed in how fortunate we are to have Patsy in our lives. But perhaps Lorna is right and we should give ourselves a pat on the back when it's due: Patsy could not ask for a more devoted, loving, stubborn, unique, committed bunch of fans!

December 22, 2002:

Read all about Auction Day, a.k.a. "Lucy and Ethel go to Ohio...." here's an excerpt:

".... Then, we needed a bidder… who would actually do the bidding on the big day? What was involved? What were the risks? How the hell does this work, anyway?? That's where things got a little crazy for this gal… I just said, 'Ok, I'll do it!!!' It seemed simple to me at the time. It seemed to me that anyone could do it, but other folks were not available for many reasons, so I just threw in my Stetson, having little idea of what would be involved, figuring that I would learn along the way.... As the time drew closer, Lisa had a great idea!! Instead of me doing the bidding at home alone, why couldn't we just meet somewhere centrally, and I could have some great company, and best of all some wonderful moral support. Plus, hell, two heads are always better than one...."

Got a mail from Patsy's pal Marie Flynt:

You're probably not going to believe this, but we have 8-10 roses in front of the house. Our cold weather last week wilted all the roses and buds. However, Friday - one of our Patsy Cline roses bloomed. Coincidence or what?

I do not remotely agree with what this page conjured up about Patsy, even after waiting and waiting for all the names to sift out! If the Patsy Cline sound is similar to the Glen Campbell sound, I am a cello!

I'm taking a well-deserved Christmas break and will see y'all after the new year (you might want to check in here and at Bill's Chronicle for late breaking news about the auction results, though). There are lots of exciting things going on in PatsyLand and here at Patsified! so stick around... there's never a dull moment, that's for sure!
